President Donald Trump is doubling down on one of his most attention-grabbing promises: eliminating individual federal income taxes and replacing them with revenue from tariffs on foreign goods. According to Trump, Americans could soon keep every dollar from their paychecks—because tariffs would do the heavy lifting.
Throughout the 2024 campaign, Trump repeatedly floated the idea of scrapping income taxes altogether. Supporters saw it as a major win for workers; critics called it unrealistic. Now, as president, he’s putting the proposal front and center again.
“We should be tariffing foreign nations to enrich our citizens—not taxing our citizens to enrich foreign nations,” Trump said during his campaign, according to Fox Business.
“Why not?”
During a widely viewed conversation with podcaster Joe Rogan, Trump didn’t hesitate when asked if he truly planned to eliminate personal income taxes.
“Yeah, sure, why not?” he said, adding that tariffs could fully fund the government instead of wages and salaries—per reporting from ABC News.
“We will not let foreign nations take our jobs, our factories, or our workers unless they pay a big price—and that price is tariffs.”
