Another day, another headline-making Donald Trump announcement — and this time, it’s about money.
The former president has once again set social media ablaze with a bold new promise: a $2,000 “dividend” payment to most Americans, supposedly funded by tariff revenues. The claim, made on his Truth Social account, immediately sparked excitement, confusion, and plenty of skepticism across the country.
“A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high-income people!) will be paid to everyone,” Trump wrote on Sunday.
Sounds great, right? Free money from tariffs — what’s not to love? But as with many of Trump’s attention-grabbing pledges, experts are urging Americans to take a deep breath before planning how to spend that windfall.
So far, Trump hasn’t clarified who would actually qualify for the payments, when they might arrive, or how the government would fund them. He instead painted a grand picture of success, claiming his tariff strategy has made the U.S. “the richest and most respected country in the world,” while boosting stock markets and 401(k) accounts to record highs.
