Driver Dies, Students Injured in Highway 401 School Bus Crash Near London, Ont

A heartbreaking accident unfolded Sunday morning on Ontario’s Highway 401 near London when a school bus carrying dozens of students veered off the road, leaving the driver dead and several children injured.

Ontario Provincial Police confirmed that the crash happened around 9:40 a.m., when the westbound bus left the highway and tipped onto its side in a ditch. The vehicle was carrying 42 students from Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School (KCI), who were en route to Point Pelee National Park for a multi-day field trip.

Constable Steven Duguay said the 52-year-old driver from the Waterloo region was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of family. Four students were taken to hospital with minor injuries, while others were treated on-site and reunited with parents at a nearby community centre.

Emergency crews closed a section of Highway 401 between Veteran’s Memorial Parkway and Highbury Avenue for several hours as investigators examined the wreckage. By late afternoon, the highway reopened, but the emotional impact remained.
