Elephant finally rescued after over 80 years in shackles, finally lays down and rest

Elephants have long symbolized wisdom, strength, and grace. Yet, for far too many, life has meant confinement, labor, and suffering—conditions far removed from the wild environments they once called home. Thankfully, awareness is spreading, and with it comes hope, compassion, and action.

One deeply moving story is that of Grandma Somboon, an elephant whose journey has become a beacon of resilience and transformation. Taken from her natural habitat as a young calf, Somboon spent more than 80 years working in Thailand’s tourism and logging industries. Like many elephants used for entertainment, she was separated from her family and spent decades performing, giving rides, and walking city streets—far from the life she was meant to live.

When the Save Elephant Foundation learned of Somboon’s situation, they knew something had to change. Their mission was clear: to provide her with the care and rest she had never known. In January, at 87 years old, Somboon was rescued and brought to the peaceful grounds of Elephant Nature Park—a sanctuary dedicated to rehabilitating and protecting elephants in need.

Her condition on arrival reflected years of hardship. She was underweight, with dull eyes and dry skin, showing signs of fatigue and neglect. Yet what stood out even more than her physical state was her quiet determination. And then, something incredible happened. Unlike many rescued elephants who need weeks to adjust and feel secure, Somboon lay down to sleep on her very first night—a deeply symbolic moment that marked the beginning of her healing journey.
