Anchorage, Alaska – Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Alaska today, August 15, for a high-profile meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump. The summit is aimed at exploring potential steps toward ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and is drawing global attention for both its diplomatic significance and its unusual location.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mr. Trump expressed optimism, telling NBC News that he believes President Putin “wants to make a deal” and that discussions could be “very productive.” The former president added that, if progress is made, he hopes it could lead to a future meeting that would include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
This marks the first time in nearly a decade that President Putin has met a U.S. leader on American soil. The last U.S.–Russia summit took place in Geneva in 2021, prior to the escalation of the war in Ukraine.
