The FBI has successfully captured one of its most notorious fugitives, bringing relief to a case that has haunted North Carolina for nearly a decade.
Alejandro Rosales Castillo, 27, had been on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list since 2017 after fleeing the United States. He was wanted in connection with the 2016 murder of 23-year-old Sandy Ly Le, his former coworker in Charlotte, North Carolina.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that Castillo was arrested on Friday in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico. He remains in custody as officials coordinate his extradition back to North Carolina, where he faces charges related to the tragic murder.
Despite a nationwide manhunt and a $250,000 reward for his capture, Castillo had managed to live a seemingly normal life while evading authorities.
FBI Highlights Successful Operation
Director Patel emphasized the significance of the capture:
“Alejandro Castillo’s arrest marks the fifth Ten Most Wanted fugitive apprehended under this administration and the FBI since last year—more than the total from the previous four years combined. This success reflects the dedication and resources provided to law enforcement. Exceptional work by our Charlotte team, FBI Legat Mexico, and local and federal partners in both countries has brought long-awaited justice for Sandy Ly Le’s family.”
Background of the Case
Ly Le and Castillo had briefly dated while working together at a Charlotte restaurant. Reports indicate Castillo, then 17, owed Ly Le money. After their breakup, he failed to repay her and reportedly began a relationship with another colleague.
On the night of August 9, 2016, investigators say Castillo lured Ly Le under the pretense of repayment. She was allegedly coerced to withdraw $1,000 from an ATM before Castillo drove her to a secluded area and fatally shot her. Her body was later discovered in a wooded ravine.
James C. Barnacle Jr., FBI Charlotte Special Agent in Charge, reflected on the lengthy investigation:
“For over nine years, Castillo lived thinking he might never be caught. But our investigators never wavered in pursuing justice for Sandy.”
Barnacle added that while the loss of Ly Le cannot be undone, the arrest provides her family with a measure of closure.
Local Officials React
North Carolina’s 10th District Congressman Pat Harrigan praised the law enforcement effort, posting on X:
“Nearly nine years after a Charlotte murder, the man responsible is finally in custody. Grateful to FBI Charlotte, CMPD, and federal partners for their persistence in bringing justice home.”
The arrest of Castillo represents a significant achievement for both U.S. and international law enforcement and serves as a reminder of the long-term commitment required to solve serious crimes. Families affected by violent crimes often endure years of uncertainty, and the capture of fugitives like Castillo can bring a crucial sense of accountability and closure.
