“It’s like a code, but it doesn’t make sense,” Clem said.
“Check out the last one, and then put the numbers in order,” Sheldon suggested, and then left.
The final message read: “Go to the bank, Clem.”
When Clem arranged the numbers in the order she received the sheep, a bank account number appeared.
The next day, Clem went to the bank and discovered that her grandmother had been saving money for her since she was born. The account held $120,000.
“Ma’am,” the consultant said. “There’s more. Your grandmother also had a safety deposit box in your name. I’ll give you access to it now.”
The banker brought Clem a box containing a letter.
“Dearest Clem,
You figured it out! Forgive this old lady for playing with you in this way, but I love you so much. I had to make sure you were set for life and do it this way so that no one could take the money from you.
If I’m still around, come over for tea, honey.
I love you.
— Nana”
Clem went straight to her grandmother’s grave with flowers and a cup of tea. “Thank you, Nan,” she said, taking a sip. “You’ve opened the door to my dream college. I’ll always make you proud. You’ve loved me more than anyone else.”
