On a gray November morning in 1935, in a quiet suburb just outside Paris, a boy named Alain came into the world. Alain’s early years were marked by instability. His mother, once a pharmacist, gave up her career to help his father run a small movie theater. But the marriage crumbled when Alain was just three.
