Scrolling through an adoption website, Eleanor stopped cold. On her screen was a photo of a little girl named Charlotte — the same age Ava would have been, with the same soft curls and curious brown eyes. Her breath caught. For a moment, it felt like time folded in on itself.

Without thinking, she called the number on the screen. “I saw a little girl named Charlotte,” she told the woman who answered, her voice trembling.

The woman, Samantha from Grace Adoption Services, spoke warmly. “We’d love to meet you,” she said. “Why don’t you come by the office?”
