Colorado Wrestler’s Forfeit Sparks Ongoing Debate About Beliefs and Competition
Brendan Johnston, a high school senior from Colorado, made a personal decision during the state wrestling tournament that has since sparked widespread discussion. Guided by his Christian faith and personal convictions, Johnston chose to forfeit two matches rather than compete against female opponents.
His first forfeit came in a scheduled match against Jaslynn Gallegos. Johnston explained that while he respected all his competitors, he felt uncomfortable engaging in a physical sport like wrestling with female athletes due to his beliefs. He emphasized that his decision was not meant to offend or show disrespect but to remain true to what he felt was right.
Later in the tournament, Johnston made the same choice in a consolation match against Angel Rios. By forfeiting both matches, he brought his high school wrestling career to an early close, but also opened the door to a broader public conversation.
Gallegos, who went on to place fifth in the tournament, responded with professionalism and grace. She acknowledged Johnston’s right to make personal decisions, while also highlighting that wrestling requires dedication and effort regardless of gender. “I’m here to compete like any other athlete,” she noted.
