I never imagined I’d be sitting in a courtroom, fighting for custody of my own child. The tension was suffocating as my ex-husband, Damian, sat across the aisle with his lawyer, calm and confident. My eight-year-old son, Zaden, clutched my hand, his legs swinging nervously. The past few months had been filled with stress and uncertainty, but I knew today would be crucial for both of us.
During the hearing, Damian confidently claimed that Zaden wanted to live with him full-time. My heart sank as the judge turned to Zaden for confirmation. He hesitated—then did something extraordinary. Standing tall, Zaden held up his small phone and said, “Your Honor, may I share something important from last night?”
The courtroom fell silent. Damian’s confident smile vanished. Zaden played a recording from the night before—a conversation in which Damian tried to influence him to say things that weren’t true. Zaden’s soft, honest voice could be heard expressing how happy he was living with me, even as Damian pressured him to say otherwise.
The judge listened intently. After the recording ended, he made it clear: Zaden’s well-being came first. The custody arrangement remained unchanged, securing his comfort and stability. Additional measures were put in place to ensure better communication between all parties.
