Born on August 3, 1963, Hetfield grew up in a household where music and discipline coexisted. His mother, a light opera singer, introduced him to melody and performance, while his father worked long hours as a truck driver.
Despite a full household, emotional distance was often present. That sense of isolation would become a recurring theme in his early years and later in his songwriting.
