From Struggle to Stardom: The Jessica Chastain Story
She was born into hardship, the product of a teenage pregnancy, with nights often spent hungry and a future uncertain. Today, she’s an Academy Award-winning actress whose star shines brighter than almost anyone in Hollywood.
A Complicated Childhood
Jessica Chastain entered the world on March 24, 1977, in Sacramento, California, as Jessica Howard. Her biological father, Michael Monasterio, a rock musician, wasn’t around during her childhood, and her stepfather, firefighter Michael Hastey, raised her alongside her mother, Jerri Hastey, a hardworking vegan chef. Life was tough.
“I did grow up with a single mother who worked very hard to put food on our table. We did not have money,” Jessica recalled in a 2017 interview with The Irish Times. “There were many nights when we had to go to sleep without eating.”

She and her younger sister spent their days playing outside until dusk, wishing the light would last just a little longer. Yet for Jessica, the world wasn’t always kind. By age eight, she faced bullying for her red hair and freckles. “I was told every day that I was ugly,” she admitted. “No one wanted to be my friend. The most cruel things.”
Tragedy struck again in 2003 when her sister died by suicide, followed by the death of her biological father in 2013. Despite the pain, Jessica remained determined to carve out a life and career of her own.
