Despite the grim prognosis, Riona refused to give up. Through months of intense physiotherapy, she slowly began to regain movement. Her determination paid off when she took her first steps with the help of parallel bars — a milestone that amazed her doctors and gave her the motivation to keep going.
After four months in hospital, she returned home to face new daily challenges, including the steep staircase leading to her front door. Yet her love for her children pushed her forward.
During her rehabilitation, Riona met Keith Mason, a 35-year-old personal trainer and former professional rugby player. What began as a working relationship grew into a deep bond, and the two have now been together for nearly a year, blending their families and supporting each other in every way.
Today, Riona has achieved more than she once thought possible. She has completed two marathons in her wheelchair and can now walk short distances without assistance. For longer outings, her wheelchair remains a tool of independence rather than limitation.
Her ex-husband has stated that he requested a divorce before her stroke, not during her hospital stay, and that he continued to support her and their children. Riona, however, has chosen to focus on the future rather than the past.
Her story stands as a reminder that even in life’s darkest moments, strength, love, and perseverance can lead to a brighter tomorrow.
