Kyle Greenbecker had spent a long year working on an oil pipeline in Alaska, but he was finally heading home to his wife, Lisa. They had met in high school, and despite their young age, Kyle had never regretted marrying her. They had always been each other’s support, and he had always trusted their relationship.
When he landed and picked up his luggage, he eagerly looked around for Lisa, but she wasn’t there to greet him. Thinking it was probably an emergency at work, Kyle sent her a quick text but received no reply. He took an Uber home, hoping to find her there.
When he arrived, Kyle was shocked to find a bassinet on the kitchen table, with a baby inside. A folded note next to the bassinet contained a message in unfamiliar handwriting: “You had your fun, now take responsibility for your child.”
Another note from Lisa, written in her familiar handwriting, left him devastated. It read, “Kyle, yesterday I found this child on our doorstep with that note attached. I always suspected you cheated on me during your business trips, but I didn’t hold a grudge. But saddling me with someone else’s child is too much. I’ve filed for a divorce and hope I never see you again.”
Kyle, confused and heartbroken, stared at the baby. As he held the child, trying to make sense of the situation, he realized that he had no idea how to care for a baby. After an internet search on how to change a diaper, Kyle did his best to follow instructions. He quickly discovered that fatherhood wasn’t going to be easy, but he was determined to rise to the challenge.
