“Don’t do this, Jen,” I said the morning of her wedding. “Marrying Chris is a mistake.”

She stood in front of the mirror, lace sleeves loose on arms that had grown thinner during the engagement. She tried to smile through trembling mascara.
“I love him,” she said softly. “He messes up, but he always comes back.”

“That’s exactly the problem,” I replied. “A wedding doesn’t fix someone who keeps leaving.”

She squeezed my hands. “Please. Even if you don’t believe in him… believe in me.”

So I stood beside her. Because that’s what big brothers do. I just didn’t know yet that one day, I’d be standing between her children and the man she married.

Chris turned out exactly as I feared—disappearing, apologizing, repeating the cycle. Jen kept believing. She always believed.
Then came years of disappointment as she struggled to have a baby. When IVF finally worked, she called me sobbing with joy.
