I started noticing how often David helped our new neighbor, Lauren. At first, it seemed innocent—carrying boxes, fixing things. But soon, his visits became more frequent.
One night, I asked, “Why do you keep going over there?”
He barely looked up. “She’s a single mom who needs help, Sarah. It’s nothing.”
I convinced myself he was just being kind, but doubt lingered. Then, one day, I came home early and saw David on Lauren’s porch, hugging her. My heart sank. Was he cheating?
The next morning, I couldn’t hold it in. I needed answers. I visited Lauren under the pretense of bringing cookies. As we made small talk, her son Max ran in. His dark hair and brown eyes reminded me of David, and the resemblance shook me.
Lauren invited us to Max’s birthday party, but I had a plan. I arranged for a truck to dump trash on her lawn during the party, exposing whatever they were hiding. When the truck arrived, David and Lauren were shocked, but I confronted them. “You’ve been lying! Max looks just like you, David!”
David looked confused, but then I saw the cake on the table. It said, “Happy Anniversary, Sarah.”
