I’d always imagined my wedding day as the happiest moment of my life. At thirty, I’d wondered if lasting love had passed me by—until I met Robert. He was thoughtful, intelligent, and had a way of making me laugh even on my worst days. Everything felt right… until it didn’t.
Two days before we were supposed to say “I do,” Robert came home with a strange expression. His usual calm demeanor was replaced with unease.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
He hesitated, then said, “Katherine, I’m so sorry… I have to leave on a work trip. I wouldn’t go unless it was urgent.”
I was stunned. “But the wedding is in two days,” I replied, barely able to hide my disappointment.
He reassured me, saying everything was already arranged and that he would be back in time. When I asked who he was going with, he simply said, “Travis.” I knew Travis was his boss, but something about the entire situation didn’t sit right.
Later that evening, my phone rang—Travis’s name lit up the screen. Curious, I picked up. When I mentioned the trip, he seemed confused. “I’m actually away this week,” he told me. The contradiction was too much to ignore.
