“Are you alright?” I asked.

She looked up, her clear blue eyes filled with exhaustion. “I’ll manage,” she whispered.

I couldn’t leave her there. “Come with me,” I said, offering her a warm house and soup. Reluctantly, she accepted.

Introducing her as Margaret, my kids welcomed her with kindness—blankets, chairs, and proud displays of paper ornaments on our tiny Christmas tree. That night, we shared tea and stories. “No one should be alone on Christmas,” I told her.
