When our mom passed away last fall, we were overwhelmed. Emotionally, of course—but also financially. She didn’t leave much behind, just a modest life insurance policy. The plan was simple: use the money to cover her final expenses and then divide the rest between me and my sister, Nia.

Nia had always been the bold one. Charismatic, full of ideas, always chasing something new. She’d talked about marrying her long-time boyfriend Mateo for years, but finances had held them back. So when she mentioned a small elopement, I assumed it would be quiet and simple.

But then I saw the video. A full wedding by the lake—drone footage, live music, the works. I was shocked.

I sent her a quick message, asking when they decided to go all out. She replied vaguely, saying a friend of Mateo’s had “helped out.” I was skeptical, but I didn’t press.

A week later, while reviewing the final documents from our mom’s estate with the lawyer, I learned something surprising: the remaining funds had already been claimed—by Nia. She had requested early access and used it all. I was stunned. I hadn’t known it was even an option, and I certainly hadn’t agreed to it.
