I used to think our marriage was unshakable. After eight years together, Mark and I had built a life of quiet rituals—Friday night takeout, weekend strolls, inside jokes only we understood. When our daughter Sophie was born, she brought a light into our world that made everything feel complete.

I had recently misplaced a pair of gold earrings—vintage, slightly worn, and deeply sentimental. They once belonged to Mark’s grandmother and had been passed down to me after our wedding. I looked everywhere for them, convinced they’d turn up.

Two days later, I stepped into the elevator and saw my neighbor, Danika, wearing them.

At first, I thought I was mistaken. But I knew those earrings. The slight dent on the clasp. The unique design. They weren’t just similar—they were mine.

Danika must’ve noticed me staring. “My boyfriend gave them to me,” she said, smiling.
