After an unexpected night of speed dating, I excitedly showed my mom a picture of the guy I met. Her reaction shocked me—she panicked and called 911. What I discovered the next day left me gasping.
As I smoothed my dress in the dimly lit restaurant, I couldn’t shake my nerves. At 30, I never imagined I’d be speed dating, but my best friend Lily had convinced me.
“You’ve got this, Selena,” I whispered to myself. Then the bell rang, signaling the first round.
A tall, dark-haired man sat across from me. “Hi, I’m Robin,” he said, his grin lighting up the room.
“Selena. Nice to meet you,” I replied, feeling an instant connection. We talked effortlessly, and I was captivated by his stories.
When the bell rang again, Robin hesitated. “Would you like to grab coffee after this? I’d love to continue our conversation.”
“I’d really like that. How about tomorrow?” I said, my heart fluttering.
As I left that night, I felt my life was about to change.
The next afternoon, I couldn’t stop smiling as I told my mom about Robin.
“He sounds wonderful,” she said, beaming. “Do you have a picture?”
I pulled out my phone to show her the selfie, but the moment she saw his face, she turned pale.
“Selena… he’s connected to a crime! Call the police!” she exclaimed.
“What? No, that can’t be!” I protested, my heart racing.
“I’ve seen his picture too many times to forget,” she insisted.
Suddenly, what had seemed charming now felt suspicious. I stopped her from calling 911 and suggested a trap instead. “I’ll act normal on our date, and you can call the police to meet us there.”
That evening, I sat across from Robin, trying to keep calm. As he complimented me, I texted my mom under the table: “Now.”
