There was no return address. Just my name, handwritten neatly on the front of a plain envelope.
Inside: a folded note, a twenty-dollar bill taped gently in place, and a moment I’ll never forget.
The letter began:
“Miss Emily, You may not remember us…”
At first, I didn’t.
But as I kept reading, the memory slowly returned—an overwhelmed couple at the grocery store checkout, their card declined, a baby crying in the cart. The cashier looked impatient. I remembered quickly stepping forward, swiping my card, and saying, “It’s okay. Let them go.”
And then I left, not thinking much of it.
Apparently, they never forgot.
“You paid for our groceries in a crowded supermarket. It makes me tear up to think about it. We’re back on our feet now, and my husband and I wanted to say thank you for your kindness and courage. You helped mi familia when we needed it most.”
