But as he lifted the pillow, his eyes widened in alarm. “Kate… we can’t keep this,” he said. He rushed to the back door and flung the pillow into the garden. “It’s ticking!”
Kate’s heart pounded. “Ticking?” she whispered.
Together, they inspected it. Hidden inside the pillow was a small box with a timer. Kate shivered as Josh opened it, recording everything on his phone. Inside was a check for $100,000.
Josh stared, wary and tense. “What kind of game is this?”
Taylor called, his voice soft but cheerful. “It’s a gift. Just a timer—meant for your anniversary. Nothing dangerous.”
Josh’s anger cracked his voice. “Dad, what is this? Are you trying to pull us into your troubles?”
Taylor’s tone softened further. “I know I’ve failed. I made mistakes, too many to count. This money—it’s for you and Emily. For her future. If you don’t want it, it’s yours to keep. No one has to know it came from me.”
Kate looked at Josh, seeing his struggle between long-held anger and the chance for reconciliation. After a long pause, Josh said, “If you’re serious, no more games. We’ll meet. One time. And you tell the truth.”
They agreed to meet at a park where Josh and Kate often took Emily. When Taylor arrived, he looked frail, his eyes full of remorse. “I’m so sorry,” he said. “I failed you and your mother. I let selfishness ruin everything. I don’t have much time left, but I want to make this right.”
Josh clenched his jaw, anger rising, but so did a desire for closure. “It’s not easy, Dad,” he admitted. “But maybe… maybe we can try. For Emily. So she knows her grandfather wasn’t just a shadow.”
Kate unpacked a picnic basket, giving everyone something simple to focus on—sandwiches, fruit, juice boxes for Emily. The little girl toddled across the blanket, giggling, as Taylor’s eyes filled with tears.
When they left the park that afternoon, Josh squeezed Kate’s hand. He wasn’t smiling, not entirely, but something had eased within him. “Maybe it’s good that pillow showed up,” he said quietly.
It wasn’t forgiveness—not yet—but it was a start.
