Exercise-Induced Vasculitis: Understanding the “Disney Rash”

Many people are concerned when they notice an angry red or purple rash on their legs after walking or exercising in hot weather. What looks like an allergy or infection may actually be a harmless condition called exercise-induced vasculitis—sometimes nicknamed golfer’s rash, Disney rash, or hiker’s rash.

While it can look dramatic, this condition is generally not dangerous. Knowing what causes it, how to relieve symptoms, and how to tell it apart from more serious conditions is important for peace of mind.

What Is Exercise-Induced Vasculitis?

This condition occurs when small blood vessels—especially in the calves, ankles, shins, and thighs—become inflamed. It usually develops in hot environments when the body redirects blood to the skin to cool down. Prolonged walking or physical activity can cause blood to pool in the legs, irritating the vessels and creating a rash.
