Millie Smith and Lewis Cann were overjoyed when they discovered they were expecting a baby. Millie had a strong feeling she might be carrying twins—her family has a history of multiples. Her intuition was confirmed: she was expecting twins.
However, during an early ultrasound, doctors delivered heartbreaking news. One of the babies had a condition called anencephaly, a severe developmental disorder affecting the brain and spinal cord. Doctors explained that the baby, a daughter, had little chance of survival.
Before her birth, Millie and Lewis gave their daughter a name: Skye. “Naming her before she was born was deeply important to us,” Millie shared. “Even if her time with us was brief, she deserved an identity, a name to hold in our hearts.”
Skye was born prematurely at 30 weeks. Though her time was short—just three hours—Millie and Lewis cherished every moment. “Skye left us in our arms,” Millie said. “It was the saddest moment of our lives, yet there was beauty and love in every second we had with her.”
After Skye’s passing, the parents received compassionate support from a midwife and were able to spend precious time in a private space at the hospital. But soon afterward, Millie noticed that Skye was rarely mentioned, and it felt as if her daughter had been forgotten.
