Inside the hectic life of Australia’s biggest family

A House Full of Helping Hands

Chores are a shared responsibility in the Bonell household. Starting at age eight, each child joins the family’s rotating chore chart. Whether it’s sweeping, preparing meals, or helping with laundry, everyone contributes.

Their 12-year-old can even cook a roast dinner for 20 with minimal help—a testament to the family’s focus on life skills and independence. Jeni does about three full loads of laundry a day, and when it comes to grocery shopping, she usually brings one of the kids along to help push the trolleys.

Making the Most of Every Moment

Despite the busy schedule, the Bonells prioritize family time. Dinner is a special moment in their day, often shared by eight to twenty family members, depending on who’s home. Some evenings are hectic, others run smoothly, but mealtime remains a treasured constant.

And while getting the perfect family photo might be a challenge, Jeni says the candid moments are often the most meaningful. “There’s always someone blinking or pulling a silly face, but that’s what makes the photos fun.”

Faith, Family, and Finding Balance

Though the Bonells are active in their church and grounded in their faith, they say their large family wasn’t part of any grand plan—it just felt right. Ray, an electrician, and Jeni both work hard to support their family, and they’re proud of their self-sufficiency.

“People have to do what’s right for them,” Ray shares. “Having 16 kids isn’t for everyone, but it’s been the right path for us.”

The couple also makes time for each other. Amid the busyness, they find small moments to reconnect—whether it’s sharing a coffee or simply enjoying a quiet evening together.

Sharing Wisdom and Building Community

With two adult children now married and starting families of their own, the Bonells are entering a new chapter—as grandparents. Still, their household remains lively and full of energy, with eight kids still living at home.

Jeni continues to share her experiences online, offering tips on meal prep, budgeting, and raising a large family. Her popular snack ideas—like air fryer egg cups and pizza bites—are simple, affordable, and kid-approved.

At the heart of the Bonell family story is a message of love, resilience, and teamwork. They’ve shown that with patience, humor, and a strong support system, it’s possible to manage even the busiest of homes.

And perhaps most importantly, they remind us that no matter the size of your family, creating a home filled with love and laughter is what truly matters.
