We all want to wake up to a fully charged phone—but did you know that how and where you charge your iPhone overnight could actually be risky? Apple itself has issued warnings that many users might be overlooking.

The company advises against charging your device in poorly ventilated areas. That means keeping your iPhone under blankets, duvets, or pillows while it charges is a big no-no. Covered devices can overheat, potentially causing discomfort—or in extreme cases, injury.

Apple also warns about prolonged skin contact with charging cables and connectors. Sleeping or sitting on your device, its power adapter, or even a wireless charger while it’s connected can be dangerous. Their official advice? “Use common sense to avoid situations where your skin is in contact with a device, its power adapter, or a wireless charger when it’s operating or connected to a power source for long periods of time.”

They stress ensuring proper ventilation around your iPhone and being extra careful if you have a condition that reduces your ability to detect heat. While this may sound overly cautious, experts say the risks are very real.
