Beloved American judge Frank Caprio, widely admired for his compassionate approach to justice, has passed away at the age of 88 after a lengthy battle with pancreatic illness. His family confirmed the news on his official Instagram page, noting that he died peacefully and will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but also as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Caprio became a household name through the television program Caught in Providence, which showcased his empathetic and often heartwarming interactions with people appearing in Providence’s Municipal Court. His unique way of balancing the law with kindness earned him international recognition. He frequently resolved minor infractions—such as traffic violations and overdue parking tickets—by offering understanding, encouragement, and sometimes even waiving fines.
Clips from his courtroom often went viral, touching millions with moments of humanity that highlighted his belief in compassion over punishment. His reputation as “America’s Nicest Judge” was further honored in 2021 when Caught in Providence received a Daytime Emmy nomination. Caprio served Providence, Rhode Island, from 1985 until his retirement in 2023.
In his final message, recorded just hours before his passing, Caprio spoke from his hospital bed to thank his supporters and humbly asked to be kept in their prayers. “I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more. So I ask you again if it’s not too much that you can remember me in your prayers,” he shared in the emotional video.
