Karoline crossed the street. As she approached, Olivia’s playing hesitated. She looked up, cautious.
“I just wanted to listen,” Karoline said softly, crouching down beside her.
Olivia gave her name and introduced her sister. She explained that their mother was ill, and she played to help provide food.
Karoline’s heart ached. She reached into her purse and handed Olivia what she had—about $240.
“Get something warm to eat,” she said kindly. “You deserve it.”
Before leaving, Karoline added with a smile, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

True to her word, Karoline returned the next morning. This time, she brought breakfast—and help.
