A well-known lifeguard and surf instructor, who once appeared in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean and Blue Crush, sadly lost his life in an unexpected incident on Oahu’s North Shore. What began as an ordinary day turned into a heart-wrenching tragedy, leaving his loved ones and the surfing community in shock.
Tamayo Perry, a 49-year-old waterman renowned for his skills at the famous Pipeline surf break, was involved in a fatal shark encounter, bringing deep sorrow to Hawaii. The details of the event have left many in disbelief.
Perry, who had worked as a lifeguard with Honolulu Ocean Safety for eight years, was a highly respected figure in the North Shore community. Following his passing, an outpouring of tributes and condolences flooded in, including a heartfelt message from Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi:
“It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of one of our dedicated lifeguards. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues in Ocean Safety during this incredibly difficult time.”
Blangiardi also highlighted Perry’s heroic legacy: “He embodied courage, commitment, and selflessness, serving our community with unwavering dedication. His efforts to keep others safe will never be forgotten.”
According to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, the tragic incident occurred just before 1 p.m. on June 23 near Goat Island. Reports indicated that Perry had been involved in a serious incident in the water. Despite the lifeguards’ quick response, Perry was brought ashore but sadly did not survive.
