Melania Trump’s annual visit to Children’s National Hospital was meant to be the kind of soft, warm holiday moment every First Lady is expected to deliver—calm smiles, a Christmas book, a room full of children, and a brief escape from the reality of being in a hospital during the holidays. The tradition itself goes back decades.
