Mexico City–Querétaro Highway Tragedy Sparks National Road Safety Debate

A tragic accident on the Mexico City–Querétaro highway has left 19 people dead and several others injured, renewing urgent discussions about road safety, freight transport regulations, and highway infrastructure in Mexico. The incident, which involved multiple cargo trucks and passenger vehicles, occurred near San Juan del Río, Querétaro, during the early morning hours.

How the Accident Happened

Preliminary reports indicate that a trailer truck suffered a mechanical failure while descending a slope. Unable to brake, the truck struck several vehicles before colliding with another freight truck. The impact triggered a fire, spreading quickly and trapping vehicles in its path.

Emergency crews, including firefighters, federal police, and paramedics, rushed to the scene. Despite their efforts, 19 fatalities were confirmed by mid-morning, and the highway was closed for several hours as authorities carried out investigations.
