Johnson explained that her goal was never to collect money from her son but to help him understand the value of what he has. She wanted to give him a glimpse of what life would be like if she were just a “roommate” rather than a parent. The lesson was about gratitude and respect from the start.
Before writing the letter, her son had lied about doing his homework, and when she threatened to limit his internet access, he replied, “Well, I am making money now.” The money he referred to was a small income from his YouTube channel, far from enough to cover basic expenses like food and rent.
Despite the public nature of the letter, Johnson’s relationship with her son remains strong. She shared, “He and I still talk as openly as ever. He has apologized multiple times.”
Since posting the letter, Johnson has had other parents reach out to her for advice. She noted, “My post seems to have opened a door, and people feel safe coming to me, asking for advice, venting, or just having someone listen to their experience. By sharing my story, I’ve been able to connect with others in a meaningful way.”
