The first time I met Linda, my boyfriend’s mother, it was clear she had already formed an opinion about me—and it wasn’t favorable. I wasn’t the glamorous, sophisticated woman she had envisioned for her son. Instead, I was a schoolteacher with simple tastes, a modest lifestyle, and a deep love for Ryan.

A Difficult First Meeting
Linda greeted me politely, but her eyes subtly assessed my off-brand dress. “Oh, it’s lovely to finally meet you,” she said, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. “Ryan’s mentioned you. Frequently.”
I recognized the pause. It spoke volumes. Still, I kept my tone warm. “You have a beautiful home,” I said sincerely, admiring the elegant decor.
Linda nodded. “We take pride in choosing what’s best for our family.” The emphasis on “best” made her meaning clear—she wasn’t sure I belonged.
Ryan was the pride of their family—successful, ambitious, and well-established. His mother had always imagined him with someone from their social circle: polished, wealthy, and effortlessly poised. I didn’t fit that mold.
