“Why would Miss Allen be your mom?” I asked gently.
Ellie hesitated, then said, “Yesterday, when Dad picked me up, Miss Allen told me to wait while she talked to him. I didn’t hear everything, but I heard her say she’d be a better mom for me… and Dad laughed.”
Suddenly, everything made sense—the sudden change in Nathan’s behavior, the move, the new job. I couldn’t avoid the truth anymore: Nathan was having an affair.
That night, after Ellie went to bed, I confronted him.
“So,” I said, trying to stay calm, “Ellie’s teacher, Miss Allen, seems to have a connection with her.”
Nathan’s face brightened. “Yeah, Ellie really likes her.”
“Enough for Miss Allen to think she should be Ellie’s mom?” I asked, my voice hard. “What’s going on, Nathan? Don’t lie to me.”
He didn’t have to say anything. His guilty expression told me everything. He admitted to having an affair that started before the move and then finding someone new—Miss Allen. They’d been seeing each other for a few weeks before Ellie overheard them.
I was devastated, but I knew what I had to do. The next day, I transferred Ellie to a new school. She deserved to be in a place free from the chaos of her father’s mistakes.
A divorce was inevitable, and while it was painful, it was also a relief. Our marriage had ended long before I was ready to admit it. Now, I’m focused on Ellie, making sure she feels loved and secure.
It’s been a few months since we started the divorce process, and Ellie is doing well. She’s happy at her new school and has moved on from what happened. Nathan still sees her regularly, and despite everything, we both make sure she knows how much she’s loved.
As for me? I’m rebuilding my life, step by step, with Ellie at the center of it all.
Has anything like this ever happened to you?
