A Birthday Dinner with a Surprise Twist
All Grandma wanted for her 85th birthday was a quiet dinner surrounded by loved ones, enjoying her favorite meal. I fully supported her wish, but the rest of the family had other ideas.
In our family group chat, Aunt Linda enthusiastically declared, “Grandma deserves something grand, not just a simple dinner.” I rolled my eyes but assumed their intentions were good.
When the big evening arrived, Grandma stepped into the upscale restaurant, looking both touched and slightly overwhelmed. She squeezed my hand and whispered, “I never expected all this fuss.”
The rest of the family, however, treated the evening like a lavish event. My cousin Katie spent most of the night posing for selfies, gushing about the “perfect ambiance,” while her brother, Mark, sampled drinks, claiming to be a connoisseur. Aunt Linda encouraged extravagant orders, making sure the bill kept rising.
Grandma smiled politely, but I could tell she wasn’t entirely comfortable with all the attention. I also knew what was coming next.
When the check finally arrived, the family’s reactions played out like a rehearsed script.
Aunt Linda sighed dramatically, saying, “Oh wow, that’s quite the total! I’d pitch in, but we’re still recovering from some unexpected expenses.”
