When my future sister-in-law chose my beloved backyard as her emergency wedding venue, I stayed calm, even though inside I was furious. But at her reception, when I presented my carefully planned gift, the look on her face changed everything.

Kara had been pampered her whole life. At 27, she still expected the world to cater to her every whim. Her parents, Gene and Lila, indulged her from birth, and everyone around her had learned it was easier to let her have what she wanted.

I had always tried to stay out of family drama, focusing instead on my relationship with her brother, Colin. I loved him deeply and believed our love could withstand anything.

My house wasn’t grand, but it was mine. I had saved every penny for years to buy it, and every corner reflected my personality and effort. My favorite place was the backyard—a peaceful space filled with flowers, garden beds, and a wooden trellis I built myself. Every rose and stone path was planted and laid with love.

Then came Kara’s wedding emergency. Her original venue flooded, and every other local location was booked or outrageously expensive. Seeing my backyard, her eyes lit up. “It’s perfect!” she exclaimed.

Despite my hesitation, I agreed to let them use it—but with one strict rule: nothing could be changed or moved. Everyone promised to respect my request.
