Ellie began at a new school, but Dani quickly noticed her daughter coming home upset. One day, she found Ellie in tears in her room.
“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” Dani asked gently.
“I don’t want Miss Allen to be my mother! I want you to be my mother!” Ellie cried.
Dani’s heart ached. Miss Allen was Ellie’s teacher. “Why would you say that?” Dani asked.
Ellie explained, “Yesterday, when Dad picked me up from school, Miss Allen told him to wait while she talked to him. I didn’t hear everything, but I heard her say she’d be a better mom to me… Dad laughed when she said that.”
In that moment, Dani realized Nathan was involved in an inappropriate relationship. Later that evening, after Ellie had gone to bed, Dani confronted Nathan. “I heard what Miss Allen said to you about Ellie,” she began.
“Really?” Nathan replied, looking surprised. “I didn’t think it was a big deal…”
“Enough to consider her a new mom?” Dani pressed. “You need to be honest with me.”
Nathan confessed to having feelings for Ellie’s teacher and admitted to past indiscretions that had affected their family.
Feeling that their marriage was beyond repair, Dani made the difficult decision to transfer Ellie to another school to protect her from the fallout. She filed for divorce and moved to a new home, allowing Nathan to visit Ellie as they navigated this transition.
