Howard had spent a lifetime in solitude, his world shaped by routine and quiet moments. Though he had no family of his own, the neighborhood children became a source of unexpected joy. They visited after school, eager to hear his stories or challenge him to a game of checkers on the porch. Their laughter filled his days, bringing a sense of purpose he hadn’t realized he needed.

But on that particular afternoon, as he sat in his worn armchair, half-watching a rerun of an old sitcom, a knock at the door broke the stillness.

He heaved himself up, expecting little Tommy with another school project or Sarah with her never-ending math questions. But when he opened the door, his breath caught in his throat.

A woman stood before him, her silver-streaked hair catching the afternoon light. In her hands, she held a small red box, its edges worn with time.

At first, he didn’t recognize her. Then their eyes met, and the years fell away in an instant.

“Kira?” His voice wavered with shock.

She smiled—gentle, uncertain, but unmistakably familiar. “Hello, Howard. I’ve been looking for you.”

A whirlwind of emotions surged through him. “You’re back?” he asked, though his mind struggled to process it.
