I found him on the couch, game controller in hand, surrounded by empty snack bags. He looked up when I said, “I got the promotion!” and gave me a half-smile. But instead of congratulations, he responded with, “That’s great, babe. Now that you’re earning more, maybe you can take over the child support for my daughter.”
I paused, unsure if I had heard him correctly. “You mean… you want me to pay child support? With my promotion?”
