And sure—Max does have a crate. But Max isn’t “just a dog.”
Why This DIY Project Was Personal
During chemo, Max was the one constant that never got tired. He didn’t need updates, explanations, or a brave face. On the hardest mornings—when I couldn’t get out of bed—he’d rest his head on my lap like it was his job to keep me here.
Now that I’m finally feeling like myself again, I wanted to give something back. Not in a quick, store-bought way, but in a way that said thank you with time, effort, and love.
From Inspiration to Blueprint
I’d been scrolling DIY and backyard project ideas in the craft communities on the Tedooo app, saving posts and learning from other makers. One day I saw a beautifully built chicken coop with an attached run and thought, Why can’t Max have his own upgraded space too?
So I started simple:
- A rough sketch on paper
- Basic measurements for a comfortable, weather-friendly layout
- A materials list that wouldn’t destroy our budget
Then came the real work—cutting wood in the driveway while neighbors walked past with sympathetic smiles, like I’d taken up a hobby that would “pass soon.”
But something surprising happened: my hands remembered what to do.
My dad taught me the basics of carpentry when I was younger, before he passed. Picking up the saw again didn’t just feel productive—it felt grounding, like I was borrowing strength from a memory I didn’t realize I still carried.
The “Luxury Upgrade” My Husband Suggested
Halfway through the build, my husband came outside, watched the structure taking shape, and said, “If you’re going all-in, you might as well add a splash pool. It’s going to be brutal this summer.”
And honestly? He wasn’t wrong. With heat waves becoming the norm, pet cooling solutions aren’t a cute extra anymore—they’re practical.
I found a compact pool through a seller on the Tedooo app who makes custom pet accessories. She helped me choose the right size and shared tips for placement and setup so it would be safe, stable, and easy to clean.
Three Weeks Later: Max’s Backyard “Villa”
After three weeks of measuring, cutting, sanding, and adjusting things I swore were “fine” until they weren’t, it was finished:
- A covered area for shade and protection
- A soft pillow bed for comfort
- A dedicated water bowl station
- And yes—his own splash pool for hot days
When Max saw it for the first time, he walked in like he owned the place, turned around twice, flopped onto the pillow, and gave me a look that said, “About time.”
Yesterday my husband snapped a photo and said, “I think the dog is living better than we are.”
Maybe he is.
But if anyone deserves a little comfort—real comfort—it’s the loyal friend who stayed close when I couldn’t even recognize my own strength.
