My name is Daisy. I’m 33, a mother of two, and for eleven years I believed I had a marriage I could count on. My husband, James, and I weren’t perfect, but we shared a history I thought would carry us through anything. We met in a little coffee shop in Lakeview, laughing over stale donuts and dreaming about the future. Back then, love felt easy and full of possibility.

A Sudden New “Routine”

About a month ago, James came home from work with an unexpected announcement. He said he was joining a late-night neighborhood patrol three evenings a week to “help keep the streets safe.” It seemed out of character—this was a man who usually avoided extra commitments—but I wanted to believe it was a positive change.

He left at 9:30 sharp each patrol night, flashlight in hand, jacket zipped, always offering a quick kiss before heading out. At first, I even felt a quiet pride, thinking he was stepping up for our community.

One Thursday night, after the kids were asleep, my phone rang with an unfamiliar number. A woman introduced herself as Linda, someone I’d never met. Her voice was tight with urgency.
