Margaret looked on, stunned, as Jennifer carried the box outside. “What are you doing?” she demanded, her voice unsteady. Jennifer paused, turning to her. “This china is special to you, even if it’s seldom used.
Just like Alex’s toys are to him, whether or not he plays with them every day,” she explained gently. “Taking his toys away didn’t teach gratitude—it only hurt him. Imagine if someone treated your china that way.”
Margaret’s expression softened as the message sank in. A few days later, she showed up at Jennifer’s door with Alex’s toys in hand, a look of quiet apology on her face. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I see it now.”
Jennifer smiled, relieved as Alex’s face lit up. “We teach best with love and patience, Margaret. Thank you for understanding.” Margaret nodded, grateful for the chance to teach her grandson with a gentler touch.
How would you have handled this situation if you were in Jennifer’s shoes?
