My mother-in-law gave me plastic earrings, while my sister-in-law received a diamond necklace. I wasn’t sure how to respond, so I smiled awkwardly. In the center of the room was a small, ornate chest. Using the key from the earrings, I unlocked it, and inside was an old diary along with a set of beautiful vintage gold jewelry.
The diary belonged to my husband’s great-grandmother, detailing her life as an immigrant and the struggles she faced.
