I’m Emily, a 17-year-old high school senior. I live with my dad, my stepmom Carla, and her son Mason. While Mason and I get along well, Carla and I don’t see eye to eye. Our relationship has been strained ever since my mom passed away seven years ago. Shortly after, my dad married Carla, and though she tried to win me over in the beginning, things quickly changed.
Over time, her passive-aggressive remarks stung. She would say things like, ‘You look too much like your mother,’ or ‘It’s no wonder your father gives Mason more attention.’ My dad never saw this side of her, leaving me to deal with it alone.
As prom approached, I had everything planned: a beautiful violet dress and a hair appointment at the same salon as my friends. But on the day of prom, when I arrived at the salon, I was told that my appointment had been canceled by someone pretending to be my ‘mom.’
I realized what had happened when I saw Carla sitting there, smirking. She had canceled my appointment to ruin my day. I was heartbroken and walked out, devastated.
