When my wife, Namira, pointed to the ceiling of our Airbnb rental, I felt a familiar chill. A tiny blinking light on the smoke detector seemed out of place. Curiosity quickly turned into dread when I climbed up, unscrewed the device, and discovered a hidden camera inside.

His words began: “You fool, this is my mother’s house.”

Confused, I kept reading. He explained that his mother had recently passed away. The camera wasn’t for spying—it was a safety device installed during her struggle with dementia.
