“Pretty Woman” remains a timeless classic that never loses its charm, no matter how many times I watch it. However, after countless viewings, I’ve recently noticed some surprising bloopers and behind-the-scenes quirks that change how we see the film.
Disney Transformed the Story
When Pretty Woman premiered, it won hearts and made stars out of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. However, the original script, titled 3,000 by screenwriter J.F. Lawton, was much darker, focusing on themes like class disparity and corporate greed. Disney reworked the plot, adding a larger budget and shifting the tone to create the romantic comedy we know today.
Al Pacino Turned Down the Lead Role
It’s hard to imagine anyone but Richard Gere as Edward, the wealthy businessman, but Al Pacino was initially considered for the part. Pacino even did a script reading with Roberts but ultimately declined. Though he praised the script, he later called Roberts’ performance “phenomenal.”
The Croissant That Becomes a Pancake
In the breakfast scene, Vivian starts with a croissant, but by the next shot, it has magically turned into a pancake. Director Garry Marshall admitted he preferred Roberts’ later takes where she ate the pancake, leading to this continuity error. Watch closely and you’ll spot the sudden change in the food!
Behind the Iconic Red Dress
The stunning red gown Roberts wears to the opera has become one of the movie’s symbols. Designed by Marilyn Vance, the dress was meant to evoke a sense of empowerment and grace. Even the brown-and-white polka dot outfit she wears to the horse races was a gem, made from antique fabric found in a small shop in Los Angeles, paired with elegant Chanel shoes.
Richard Gere’s Mysterious Tie
Gere’s iconic tie, picked up for $48, became an essential part of Edward’s wardrobe. However, in different scenes, the knot and collar change, leading to another subtle continuity error.
The Famous “Obscene” Shopping Spree
One of the most memorable scenes is Vivian’s extravagant shopping spree on Rodeo Drive. Designer Marilyn Vance estimated Edward’s spending at least $30,000 during the scene—a perfect showcase of his lavish world.
The Real Ruby-and-Diamond Necklace
The breathtaking ruby-and-diamond necklace that Vivian wears with her red gown is no prop—it’s the real deal, valued at over $250,000. An armed guard was present on set to keep the necklace safe during filming.
