Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is facing criticism from Department of Homeland Security officials following her recent comments and actions related to an immigration protest. The discussion stems from an incident in Newark, New Jersey, where several Democratic lawmakers attempted to access a detention facility without prior coordination.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at DHS, appeared on Fox News and cautioned that lawmakers who bypass security protocols could face consequences. Her comments come after Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was temporarily detained during a protest outside the Delaney Hall immigration facility. According to reports, Baraka and other local leaders were denied entry and declined to leave, prompting a response from security personnel.
Representatives LaMonica McIver, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and Rob Menendez Jr.—all Democrats from New Jersey—were also present during the protest. DHS officials stated that while lawmakers are welcome to conduct oversight visits, they must follow established procedures, such as requesting access in advance.
“If they’d just submitted a request 24 hours ahead of time, we would have gladly arranged a tour,” McLaughlin said, adding that uncoordinated demonstrations can create safety challenges for both staff and visitors.
