Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
In a mixing bowl, combine flour and a pinch of salt. Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add just enough ice water to form a stiff dough.
Step 2: Roll & Fill
On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out thin. Use a small saucer or cutter to form rounds. Spread each round with softened butter and sprinkle with sugar. Roll each one tightly into a log.
Step 3: Bake the Rolls
Place the rolls in a buttered baking dish. Bake at 400°F (200°C) until lightly browned.
Step 4: Prepare the Sauce
While the rolls bake, heat the milk in a saucepan until very hot (but not boiling). Stir in sugar to taste and add the vanilla extract.
Step 5: Finish & Serve
Once the rolls are lightly browned, pour the hot vanilla milk mixture over them. Return to the oven for 10–15 minutes, then serve warm.
Tips & Variations
- For extra flavor, sprinkle a mixture of dark brown sugar, cinnamon, and finely chopped pecans over the butter before rolling.
- Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a modern twist.
